Vishka Vidyalaya Centenary Sport Festival


Visakha Vidyalaya being renowned for achieving the supremacy in all endeavours of education and extra-curricula, presented “Visakha Vidyalaya Centenary Sports Festival” in celebration of 100 years of excellence. The four day festival scheduled 6th-9th of March 2017 comprised more than thousand local and foreign sportswomen from about 20 schools competing in ten different games of Squash, Table Tennis, Netball, Hockey, Water polo, Swimming, Badminton, Carrom, Elle and Synchronized Swimming.

The Centenary Sport Festival initialed by Principal of Visakha Vidyalaya Madam S. Aviruppola not only intended to develop health and physical fitness but to provide a platform for the ladies colleges island wide to explore their potential and create new bonds.

The first session of the festival commenced with a tournament of Squash under-20, on the 6th of March at Air Force Sports Complex Ratmalana from 8am onwards with the participation of five major ladies’ schools in Colombo. After a fair play of boxing with racquets, Visakha Vidyalaya topped first followed by Sirimavo Bandaranaike Vidyalaya second and Ladies’ College third.

The Ping Pong ball took over the heat of Lumbini College Court on the 7th and 9th of March 2017, as 11 schools competed against each other to win the Sports Festival Trophy of Table Tennis under-20. The two day tournament ended by winning Visakha Vidyalaya the trophy, Holy Family Convent- Kurunegala the second place and Ladies College the third place.

Racquets games are never flourished without a game of Badminton. More than 10 school teams acquired the Visakha Badminton Court for a two day tournament on 7th and 9th. With concluding two days of intense movement and mind-play, Sirimavo Bandaranaike Vidyalaya successfully won the Badminton Trophy while Anula Vidyalaya and Visakha Vidyalaya received the second and third positions respectively.

A game of securing the puck was held at Astro Turf, Colombo on 7th and 8th with about 10 hockey Teams Island wide, gave their fullest sweat to goal and top up the scoreboard. At the climax of an amazing Hockey game, Visakhian team secured another trophy defeating the second and third places of Sirimavo Bandaranaike Vidyalaya and Mahamaya College, Kandy.

Board game of Carrom was organized on the 8th at the school premises. After numerous rounds the final three were positioned as Dharmapala Vidyalaya on third place, Visakha Vidyalaya on second and Samudra Devi Vidyalaya – Nugegoda as the Winner of the Carrom Tournament.

Netball tournament of the Centenary Sports Festival was held on the 8th & 9th at the School Grounds with a special appearance by a Singapore school team. After much fight, the trophy was won by the Singapore team followed by Visakha Vidyalaya & Kalutara Balika Vidyalaya as 2nd & 3rd.

The traditional game of Elle was not missed, as the girls of island wide schools teamed up for a game of bat and ball. With the end of battle which was held on the 9th at the school premises, Visakha Vidyalaya received the first place completing the most rounds while Pannanda Maha Vidyalaya and Daranagama Maha Vidyalaya became 2nd and 3rd winners.

A wide variety of water sports such as Swimming, Water Polo and a beautifully choreographed Synchronized Swimming were arranged at the school’s swimming complex during the festival to showcase the mermaid moves of the girls. Water Polo Under-14 winner & Open winners were Ladies College & Visakha Vidyalaya Old girls’ team while the runners-up of both were Visakha Vidyalaya. Under-20 swimming trophy secured by the home team as Sirimavo Bandaranaike Vidyalaya & Lyceum International – Wattala achieved 2nd & 3rd positions.

The Centenary Sport Festival successfully concluded molding new bond & skills, commemorating the proud journey of a genteel clan.
