'He was heaven sent': New parents get married at a hospice so their son can be part of the ceremony before he dies of rare genetic disorder

A North Carolina couple made sure their dying infant son was present for their wedding, by tying the knot at a Lexington hospice center.

Christopher and Patricia Armstrong's one-month-old son Conner was born with Edwards' syndrome.

Patricia has described her son as 'truly heaven sent'.

Christopher told WFMY: 'Basically he has an extra eighteenth chromosome. It has more internal effects. He has three holes in his heart.'

He explained: 'We were told we didn't have much time left with Conner. So we wanted him to be [at the wedding].'

Patricia also spoke to the TV station, saying: 'We are just appreciating every minute we have with him. It's been scary. It's been emotional, but it's well worth it.'

According to the National Health Service, 'Edwards' syndrome, also known as trisomy 18, is a serious genetic condition caused by an additional copy of chromosome 18 in some or all of the cells in the body.'

'Of those that survive to birth, around half will die within two weeks and only around one in every five will live at least three months,' the NHS says.

The couple married at the hospice center where Conner was receiving care, with Christopher holding Conner while the couple said 'I do,' according to CBS News.

Conner died on Tuesday - just three days after his parents' wedding, the website reported.

Patricia wrote on Facebook Wednesday: 'We gave him the chance to live, love and be loved. We gave up everything to be closer to our son.

'We fought for Conner, and in return he fought for us and as long as he was fighting we'd be right there.

'Conner was truly heaven sent and we don't regret allowing him to have a chance at life. He was loved by so many and always will.

'We love you Conner Alexander Armstrong please pray for us as we pick up the pieces to our life.

'Find a new home and get things back to somewhat normal if at all possible.'

Christopher also took to Facebook Wednesday, writing: 'My heart is broken but I know you are in a better place and you are watching over your sisters, your mama and me.

'We cherish every minute we got to spend with you and everyone who was blessed to meet you are so grateful.'
